From Africa to Budapest – Knowledge Across Borders

13/08/2026

Here is another inspiring example of how a healthcare collaboration launched in Africa years ago can grow into a lasting professional partnership.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Petros Teklewold Mekuria, an Ethiopian neurosurgeon, to Hungary. He will spend two weeks undertaking advanced professional training at the Department of Neurosurgery of Semmelweis University, at Amerikai út, under the supervision of Gábor Nagy, MD, PhD.

Dr. Petros works at Worabe Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in southern Ethiopia. The aim of his current visit is to exchange experience and gain practical insight into modern neurosurgical techniques and knowledge. We are not simply providing assistance — we are sharing knowledge that may ultimately benefit the lives of many, many patients.

For the Planetrise Association for Cultural and Environmental Protection, this is particularly important. During our medical missions in Africa over the past years, we have repeatedly seen how a single encounter, a professional connection, or a procedure performed together can mark the beginning of a collaboration lasting for many years.

And now, an Ethiopian colleague is learning in Budapest so that, when he returns home, he can pass on the experience and knowledge he has gained here.

Sometimes help comes in the form of medicine, sometimes surgery — and sometimes it is the knowledge we pass on.

Dr. Petros's visit has been funded by the Central European Neurosurgical Foundation, while his accommodation in Budapest is being provided by Planetrise.
