Three Weeks, Three African Countries: Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya – #3
The work continues in Uganda, as Csaba and Péter visited several new locations on Lake Bunyonyi. They explored the projects of the Jane Goodall Institute and the Planetrise Foundation at the primary and secondary school located on Bwama Island. Once known as the "leper island," Bwama has been in cooperation with Hungarian organisations since 2019, while both the hospital and the school have been operating there since the 1980s.
The people living on the islands of Lake Bunyonyi rely on boats to access all essential services—children, for example, travel by water to get to school. Unfortunately, most local residents do not know how to swim, which results in a high number of drownings each year. To address this, several initiatives have been launched on Bwama Island.
Our partner organization, the Jane Goodall Institute Hungary, has donated docks and school boats to support students, teachers, and patients on the island. They have also begun renovating and repurposing buildings in cooperation with the local Anglican church. These projects are supported by Hungary Helps.
Meanwhile, the Planetrise Foundation has created a swimming education facility for students of the school, where swim training has already begun. This project is strongly supported by the MÖL – Hungarian Volunteer League Association.
