The Hungarian Reformed Donation Has Arrived in Congo

A Christian congregation in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo expressed gratitude during a worship service to the Hungarian Reformed Church and the Hungary Helps Program for their support during a tragic situation. In February, seventy members of the congregation were abducted and killed because of their Christian faith.

The mass killing was reportedly carried out by armed members of the Allied Democratic Forces, a group linked to the Islamic State.

"Our brothers and sisters in Hungary did not forget us. They supported us in our time of deep sorrow," was said during the service. "Their support gave us not only financial help but also spiritual strength," they emphasised.

This expression of thanks followed a donation of five million forints each from the Hungarian Reformed Church and the Hungary Helps Program to support the families of the seventy Christian martyrs.

Péter Gergő Juhász, elder of the Kisvárda Reformed Church and president of the Planetrise Cultural and Environmental Association, has been involved in support programmes for local communities in the region for decades.

The organisation helped ensure the funds reached the right hands. Juhász shared that the combined ten million forints from the Hungarian Reformed Church and Hungary Helps, along with an additional one hundred thousand forints from the Lions Club of Nyíregyháza, were transferred to a local partner organisation with which they have been cooperating on joint projects since 2008.

This partner helped locate the relatives of the seventy martyrs and ensured the donations were delivered directly to them. Juhász also noted that beyond financial aid, a training session was organised to teach families how to use the funds effectively—for example, by purchasing seeds or more resilient crops. Such use of the support contributes to improved food security for the families and the region. Additionally, a faith-based rehabilitation programme was held for the victims' families, all of whom were traumatised by the events.

Péter Gergő Juhász confirmed that the Hungarian donation had arrived, reached those in need, and provided tremendous help to the Christian community in Congo.
