Our Tree Planting Project Begins in Malawi
As part of our collaboration with the Jacaranda Foundation, the Planetrise Association has started a tree planting project in Malawi. Throughout the country, and especially in the southern regions, excessive deforestation is causing increasing problems.
The three mountains surrounding the city of Blantyre have nearly been completely stripped of trees, which is not only a sad sight but also leads to soil erosion, as the lack of vegetation causes the fertile land to wash away. Additionally, the rainfall results in floods that damage the homes of local residents.
Our association members feel it is crucial to stop this process. In September and October of this year, we will plant 400 trees together with the 400 students of the Jacaranda School. The Jacaranda School has been a partner of our association for many years, currently educating 400 orphaned students, which gave rise to the idea of giving each child their own tree.
All the saplings were sourced by the school's agricultural teacher from the local market. In Malawi, all the trees are native, except for the jacaranda tree, of which we ceremoniously planted 7 between the school fence and the main road. The jacaranda tree is both the namesake and symbol of the school.
Afterward, the large team moved to the site of the Jacaranda Foundation's under-construction kindergarten, where we planted another 40 trees. The remaining 300+ trees will be planted by the students over the following days around the school area.
We are planning additional tree planting projects in Malawi with the collaboration of the Jacaranda Foundation. We will continue to report on the details through our website and Facebook.
Furthermore, we would like to express our thanks to Fertechnik Ltd. and its employees, who are supporting our efforts with the soil conditioner they manufacture and their personal work!
